Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: How far in advance should I schedule a pickup?

There's no such thing as “too early” when scheduling a pickup. If you already know where you're going and when do you want the car to get there, you can schedule the pickup as early as a month before. Waiting too long can cost you dearly, as it takes about a week (but sometimes up to 14 days) for a company to find space in a truck going to your destination. If you live in a remote area, you should also factor in additional time for a truck to reach you for the actual pickup of the vehicle.

Sure, but you should keep in mind that there may be some limitations up ahead. For example, motorcycles can only be shipped in enclosed containers, which mean you are looking to more expenses (open containers are cheaper for cars). Also, if you want to ship both vehicles in the same truck, the waiting time may be longer, as the company will need to locate a truck that has space for both. On the positive side, you may be able to negotiate a discount for shipping two vehicles at the same time.

If your vehicle is in working condition, it will be driven on and off the container or truck and maybe to the inspection area in the case of international shipping. Some companies note the odometer reading in their paperwork when they accept the car, so you can check the numbers when you pick up your vehicle.

Unfortunately, car shipping companies have a strict policies regarding how and when the car should be inspected. In most cases, this means that you need to note any damages prior to signing the release of the car from the driver or port and make sure the driver notes those complaints. Once you drive away, you're basically giving up your right to complain.

Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Is door-to-door shipping really to my door?

More than likely, no. Delivery trucks are big (often over 75 feet long) and they often don't fit into residential streets. Even if they do, the city may not allow large trucks into its streets, so they still wouldn't be able to make it to your door. Chances are your car will be delivered to a nearby location, such as a large parking lot or a shopping center.

The short answer is no. You may be able to find a company that will narrow down the dates to a couple of days, but anything more than that will be just impossible. There are simply too many variables (weather, driving conditions, port taxes and custom delays) to keep in mind.
