1  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Is there such thing as a rush pickup? on: November 24, 2008, 08:11:44 AM
Most companies do offer this service. While you generally need to schedule your pickup at least a week in advance, rush services (72 hours or less) can be ordered as long as you're willing to pay an additional fee of a few hundred dollars.
2  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: How far in advance should I schedule a pickup? on: November 24, 2008, 08:11:22 AM
There's no such thing as “too early” when scheduling a pickup. If you already know where you're going and when do you want the car to get there, you can schedule the pickup as early as a month before. Waiting too long can cost you dearly, as it takes about a week (but sometimes up to 14 days) for a company to find space in a truck going to your destination. If you live in a remote area, you should also factor in additional time for a truck to reach you for the actual pickup of the vehicle.
3  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: How long will it take to ship my vehicle? on: November 24, 2008, 07:57:23 AM
It depends on a lot of factors, from weather to distance to company averages. As a general rule, it takes 1-2 weeks for a truck to reach coast-to-coast destinations. Trucks usually don't drive during harsh winter conditions, so snow will delay the delivery. So will certain road conditions such as ice or construction.

Sure, but you should keep in mind that there may be some limitations up ahead. For example, motorcycles can only be shipped in enclosed containers, which mean you are looking to more expenses (open containers are cheaper for cars). Also, if you want to ship both vehicles in the same truck, the waiting time may be longer, as the company will need to locate a truck that has space for both. On the positive side, you may be able to negotiate a discount for shipping two vehicles at the same time.
5  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Shipping my car from Hawaii on: November 24, 2008, 07:48:42 AM
To get a car out of Hawaii you will need to show proof of ownership plus a certificate of registration. This is in addition to whatever other paperwork you are also required by the shipping company.

If your vehicle is in working condition, it will be driven on and off the container or truck and maybe to the inspection area in the case of international shipping. Some companies note the odometer reading in their paperwork when they accept the car, so you can check the numbers when you pick up your vehicle.
7  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: What qualifies as a car for shipping purposes? on: November 24, 2008, 07:39:11 AM
This may very well depend on the company you're using. As a general rule, anything more than 7 feet tall is not considered a standard car and is subject to extra fees or special considerations. Certain car modifications (such as the addition of a camper shell) can also take your car outside of the “standard” category.
8  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: My car was damaged during transport on: November 24, 2008, 07:38:51 AM
Unfortunately, car shipping companies have a strict policies regarding how and when the car should be inspected. In most cases, this means that you need to note any damages prior to signing the release of the car from the driver or port and make sure the driver notes those complaints. Once you drive away, you're basically giving up your right to complain.
9  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: What things should be removed from my car before shipping? on: November 24, 2008, 07:28:03 AM
Some companies allow you to keep a certain amount of personal belongings in the trunk when you ship the car. Other companies do not. Check in advance. Aside from that, you are required to remove antennas, luggage and ski racks, trailer hooks and any accessories that can get caught or cause damage to the other vehicles in the truck.
10  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Is door-to-door shipping really to my door? on: November 24, 2008, 07:27:46 AM
More than likely, no. Delivery trucks are big (often over 75 feet long) and they often don't fit into residential streets. Even if they do, the city may not allow large trucks into its streets, so they still wouldn't be able to make it to your door. Chances are your car will be delivered to a nearby location, such as a large parking lot or a shopping center.
11  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Can I pay for the shipping with a credit card? on: November 24, 2008, 06:07:25 AM
Usually, you can pay for the deposit with any major credit card, but if you have something left over to pay by the time the vehicle is delivered (meaning, you need to pay the driver), credit cards are not an option. You will either have to pay cash at the time, or hand over a cashier's check or money order.
12  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: How is price determined when shipping a car? on: November 24, 2008, 06:06:55 AM
Not necessarily. Prices have to do not only with delivery location/distance, but also type (pick up or door-to-door delivery), vehicle size, type of vehicle (truck, car, motorcycle). Of course it also varies from company to company. So unless you're talking about a huge difference in shipping the exact same car, chances are you're fine.
13  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: Shipping times on: November 24, 2008, 05:58:37 AM
The short answer is no. You may be able to find a company that will narrow down the dates to a couple of days, but anything more than that will be just impossible. There are simply too many variables (weather, driving conditions, port taxes and custom delays) to keep in mind.
14  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: How much gas should be left in the vehicle? on: November 24, 2008, 05:58:16 AM
About 1/4 tank for cars, but motorcycles should be completely emptied. If your car has a full tank at the moment of pick up, shipping companies have the right to charge you an additional fee to empty the tank to specifications.
15  Kar Shipping Forum / General Auto Shipping Information / Re: When are duty and import taxes due? on: November 24, 2008, 05:57:46 AM
It's unlikely. Companies can only estimate how much the total cost of taxes would be, so they won't let you pay in advance and risk having to cover the difference. More than likely, you will have to pay once the vehicle has cleared customs at the destination port.
