A friend of mine told me never to pay in full for car shipping service in advance with cash because with cash, you have no recourse.  Are there any other options?

Many car shipping companies offer the option of paying a deposit up front via credit card and the remainder upon delivery of your car. You can find companies that accept credit card payments online in your local area.

I'm a transporter and I rarely take cash at the time of p/u.  The only times I do is if they won't be there to accecpt the car themselves, but mostly in those cases people with foward or western union the money prior to my drop off date.

There are some cases, but...limited I'd say!  If you find a carrier that only takes cash up front or on p/u only, then I would stay away from them.  However, if you ever pay ANYTHING UP FRONT....get it on paper for sure.
