I need to pick up my car at a foreign port and I want to make sure I’m there by the time it arrives. However, I’m not given a specific arrival date for the ship, so how can I get the right plane tickets?!

The best you can do is guess. Do talk to the shipping company and ask for an estimate pick-up and delivery date. Then buy plane tickets that can be exchanged for a minimal or no fee. You usually have 24 hours to pick up your car before storage fees start running, so try to work out the schedule the best you can. It may even be cheaper to arrive earlier and stay a couple of additional nights at a hotel, waiting for a car, than arriving late and having to pay for storage fees.
