However, I didn't realize that until I got home and was able to look at the car better. Can I still claim the damages?

Unfortunately, car shipping companies have a strict policies regarding how and when the car should be inspected. In most cases, this means that you need to note any damages prior to signing the release of the car from the driver or port and make sure the driver notes those complaints. Once you drive away, you're basically giving up your right to complain.
